After several years of cave exploration in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, "Labnaha" felt it was time to share knowledge of their underwater exploration experiences , jungle survival technics and their newfound respect for the ancient Mayan culture and the nature that surrounded their base camp in the jungle with a world where traditional values are increasingly difficult to find.
The Labnaha team protects two hundred hectars of land within the ancient Mayan realm, taking care to respect the traditions, flora, fauna and people of this culture.
The members of Labnaha have gained this knowledge while living among the Mayan village people found hidden away within the tourist destination of the Riviera Maya.
The Mayan word "Labnaha" means "old temple in the water" for the caves that represented protection and home to these global thinking people.
"Labnaha" is represented by the icon of the god 'Labna" who was a much venerated god in the ancient Mayan period.
The Mayan culture that suffered greatly with the clash of cultures during European colonization, has found a way to survive in the jungle hidden from the invading cultures that try to change their way of life.
"Labnaha" tries hard to stay in touch with the needs of this culture by learning about their way of life and incorporating these needs into our activities which has allowed us to see the world with another perspective.
Our team finds it important to help protect this culture as well as the underwater cave systems and fragile ecosystem that mean so much to them in the face of the advancing modern world.
The "Labnaha" team feels that there is no better way to protect these people and their complex ecosystem than to educate our visiting clients to understand and know them within their natural world.
We understand that the best teachers for this are the Mayan people themselves living in hamlets throughout this area, since these are the people that taught us when we first started our own explorations.
We at "Labnaha" provide our diving clients an opportunity to immerse themselves not only into the underwater cave systems, but also into the Mayan culture through our own knowledge from years of exploration in order to obtain a real view into the harmony of these people and the place they live in.
Labnaha is fully dedicated to showing our clients the mysteries of the mystic Mayan culture by developing all of our activities to be respectful of the culture and the environment that surrounds it by not putting a material emphasis into our facilities in the jungle. We have kept our encroachment into this environment as natural as possible.
